Songs & Story - New York Remembers Rory Gallagher

"When Rory came to town, it was rough going, you know, it was the coming of Jesus!"

A strange magic happened at the legendary Bottom Line in New York City on the night of October 23rd, 2002. Rory Gallagher, the Irish blues guitar great, had been gone seven years, lost unexpectedly and far too young, but his potent legacy sprang back to life this night, in a glorious convergence of SONGS AND STORIES.

This celebration of Rory's life and work was a labor-of-love for Seamus Kelleher, a fan of Rory's since his own boyhood in Ireland. He brought together a crack group of fellow musicians to remember the man who put Ireland on the R&B map at the height of The Troubles.

"He was a huge influence," Kelleher says. "During a career spanning 30 years he sold over 20 million albums. He was not only a great blues guitar player, but also a wonderful songwriter and a favorite of Bob Dylan and John Lennon."

The event was captured by Home Team Productions, which is proud to have created an hour-long documentary around the performance, about Rory's life and work. The film, also entitled SONGS AND STORIES, tells Rory's story through his songs; through the words of the musicians so inspired by him; and most poignantly, through his brother Donal, who was his manager and confidante.

"He achieved every goal he set out to achieve," Donal recalls, with pride and not a little rue. "Had enormous silent influence, if you like. Still waters run deep as they say. That's the blues isn't it? He literally lived and died the blues."

Rory Gallagher married the soul of the Mississippi Delta to the heart of rock and roll - he recorded with Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf, whom he revered. As a performer, he was transported, shamanistic, at one with his music, transcendent, possessed. But at the same time, this extraordinary artist was connected with his fans in a wholly human way. Fiercely independent, he rejected the trappings of the rock star. The lives of those lucky enough to see him play were touched forever. And, he threw open a door for the many Irish artists who were to follow in his footsteps, such as U2 and the Boomtown Rats.

The performers interpreting Rory's work in SONGS AND STORIES, among them Pierce Turner, Larry Kirwan of Black 47, Matt O'Ree, Sean Fleming, and of course, Seamus Kelleher of Blackthorn, along with many more, channeled him that night. Call it unfinished business. The music; the man; the memories of those who loved him - an alchemy that speaks to the depth of Rory Gallagher's contribution, and to the enduring nature of his art.

Anlässlich der neuen CD "Twilight Skies Of Life" gab es ein Release-Konzert in Tilburg im Januar diesen Jahres. Dieses Konzert wurde komplett aufgezeichnet und kommt jetzt als DVD heraus. Es handelt sich um eine Doppel-DVD. Es sind also nicht nur Aufnahmen, von diesem Konzert darauf, sondern -soweit wir gehört haben - auch ein Zusammenschnitt von Auftritten anderern Konzert, Interviews etc.

Wir dürfen also gespannt sein, was uns hier erwartet! Sobald wir ein Exempar haben, werden wir ausführlich berichten.

Die Rock-'n'-Roll-Legende Jerry Lee Lewis wird 70

"Man ist nur heiß oder kalt. Wenn man lauwarm ist, wird einen der Herr ausspucken" - das hat Jerry Lee Lewis einmal als seinen Leitspruch ausgegeben.

Seinen Rock 'n' Roll, eine Mischung aus Jazz, Country, R&B und Boogie, nennt er "Teufelsmusik". Einer seiner größten Hits "Whole Lotta Shakin Goin On" könnte als Motto über dem Leben des kompromisslosen Musikers stehen. Am 29. September feiert der Star seinen 70. Geburtstag.

"Ich war der Beste"

Lewis gehört - zusammen mit Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry und Little Richard - zu den großen Vier des Rock 'n' Roll. "Elvis war der Größte", pflegt Lewis zu sagen, "ich war der Beste". Auf jeden Fall war er der Wildeste. Kein anderes Rockerleben ist so gezeichnet von Exzessen wie das von Lewis- dem Spross einer Familie erzkonservativer Christen.

Er ist bekannt dafür, dass er Konzerte in letzter Minute absagt. Wenn er keine Lust auf das Publikum hatte, hörte er manchmal nach einer halben Stunde auf zu spielen. Falls er allerdings in Stimmung war, konnte er drei Stunden auf der Bühne stehen.

Sechs Ehen, Drogen, Schicksalsschläge

Sechs Ehen hat Lewis hinter sich, zuletzt ließ er sich 2002 scheiden. Schicksalsschläge blieben nicht aus. 1962 ertrank sein dreijähriger Sohn in einem Pool. 1973 starb ein 19-jähriger Sohn, der als Schlagzeuger in seiner Band mitgespielt hatte, bei einem Autounfall. Seine fünfte Ehefrau wurde 1983 mit einer Überdosis Heroin tot aufgefunden. Lewis selbst hatte Alkohol- und Drogenprobleme. Mitte der 70er Jahre schoss er seinem Bassisten versehentlich in die Brust. Der überlebte und verklagte den Bandleader.

News von Julian Sas: Im September 2005 hat sich Julian Sas von zwei seiner Bandmitglieder getrennt. Von dem langjährigen Drummer, Mr. Boogie-Machine Pierre de Haard und dem erst vor 1 Jahr zur Band gestossenen Piano-Man Pieter van Bogaert.

Tenny Tahamata, der Bassist, bleibt vorerst in der Band und als neuer Drummer spielt jetzt Rob Heijne. Er ist der ehemaige Drummer der holländischen Rory Gallagher Tribute Band LAUNDROMAT.

Rory´s Mutter, Monica, hatte am Freitag, den 12.08.2005, einen schweren Herzinfarkt von dem sie sich nicht mehr erholte. Sie verstarb am Sonntag, den 14.08.2005. Unsere Gedanken sind bei ihrer Familie und wir trauern mit ihnen. Wir sind sehr dankbar dafür, sie an Rory´s Todestag im Juni noch einmal getroffen zu haben. Möge sie ruhen in Frieden!!

Sadly missed by her loving son, sisters Noreen and Kathleen, daughter-in-law Cecilia, sister-in-law Kathleen, grandchildren Eoin, Daniel, Catherine and Hugh, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Lying in repose at the Temple Hill Funeral Home, Boreenmanna Road, of Jerh O'Connor Ltd. Removal at 6.30pm on tomorrow (Tuesday) to St Columba's Church, Douglas. Requiem Mass at 2pm on Wednesday. Funeral afterwards to St Oliver's Cemetery, Model Farm Road.
May she rest in peace.

Not the common household name...
Rory Gallagher, who died in 1995 is not the common household name like Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton or Jimmy Page.
Which is a shame.
A two time Melody Make - Top Musician of the Year (1972 and 1974) Rory not only performed with the likes of Muddy Waters and Albert King, even The Rolling Stones wanted Rory to replace Mick Taylor. However he preferred to follow his own path, focusing on his original music.
He incorporated and integrated many different styles as diverse as Blues, Rock, Folk and Celtic into an ecclectic mix.
The legacy lives on
Rory is about energy, passion and personal musical integrity, playing a big role in influencing other guitarists. Brian May of Queen, The Edge from U2, Gary Moore and Slash are devoted Rory fans.

Speaking of his fans...
The fact that he did win this month's election, dominating from start to finish, shows that there still is a large, dedicated fanbase out there. Fans who keep the legacy of this versatile Irish guitarist alive.

The Northern Connection.
Presented by Dino McGartland from Omagh, editor of the "Stagestruck" fanzine and major fan and Gallagher authority. Dino traces the Ballyshannon and Derry years and the family's time in the Northwest. Rory moved to Belfast and played the famous Maritime Club in early years when Taste were on the scene. Dino goes on the trail with Gerry McAvoy; Brendan O'Neill; John Wilson; Lou Martin and Charlie McCracken all former Gallagher sidemen plus Eric Bell of Thin Lizzy. Rory played Belfast to acclaim at the height of the bombings and civil unrest in the seventies and won the hearts and minds of his Irish fans.

Programme 2: Sunday 31st July.
Going to My Home Town.
Presented by Marcus Connaughton profiling Gallaghers home city in the early 1950s, portraying the social and music scene of the time with considerable use of archive and exclusive early recordings of Rory and some of his musical contemporaries. Interviews with family and relatives discussing his early musical exploits, the purchase of the legendary Fender Stratocaster in Crowleys in 1963; Banjo/Mandolin and Guitar Magazine. In the seventies and eighties we awaited his seasonal Christmas tours with great anticipation.

Programme 3: Sunday 7th August
Earl Hooker - Tampa Red.
Where and how did a teenager in the Ireland of the fifties discover the Blues with no pop radio; no music press; no TV.the journey to Radio Luxembourg; Armed Forces Network; Humphrey Lyttleton and Alexis Korner. Under the bedclothes with a torch and a bulky Bush transistor.

Programme 4: Sunday 14th August
Taste Years - Cork - Belfast - and beyond.
The early sixties in Ireland saw music develop from Showbands to Beat Groups to Rock and Roll - interviews with Ken Stewart; Larry Gogan; founder members of Taste -Eric Kitteringham and Norman Damery; Johnny Campbell - longtime friend through the Axells and The Impact. Impresario Pate Egan and his Spotlight weekly column. Presented by Marcus Connaughton.

Programme 5: Sunday 21st August
The Glory Years - Muddy Waters et al.
Following the break up of Taste he pursues a solo career with various sidemen a constant in his band lineups. Gallagher records with his hero- Muddy Waters alongside Georgie Fame and Stevie Winwood who recall the recording. He features in the Top Five Guitarists in the World in the company of Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page and regularly dominates the front page of Melody Maker; Sounds and Record Mirror.

Programme 6: Sunday 28th August
The Legacy - the Tributes and the Bootlegs.
In the final programme in the series we move from Gallagher's literary hero Dashiell Hammet and his interest in B Movies through to the considerable range of bootleg recordings that exist. Since his passing tribute bands such as Brute Force and Ignorance; The Loop; Aftertaste; Stagestruck; The Mississippi Sheiks and Sinnerboy have entertained fans throughout the world.

Am 28.06.2005 trat Joe Bonamassa (u. Jesus Volt) auf der Burg Satzvey (Bourbonensaal) für den Rockpalast auf.

Die LP, die im Jahr 1971 erschien, ist schon seit langem ein unerschwingliches Sammlerstück. Ich selbst habe versucht, in den 70er Jahren versucht, diese LP zu bekommen und hatte kein Glück. Wenn sie heute zufällig einmal angebot wird, dann für Preis zwischen 300 und 400 USD!!!!

Umsomehr sind wir begeistert, dass es diese LP nun endlich als CD gibt.

Rory spielt als Gastmusiker bei dem Stück "Come Back Baby" die Leadgitarre. Auch der verstorbenen Leadgitarrist der Gruppe FREE, Paul Kussoff, ist als Gastmusiker dabei. Mike Vernon ist heute bekannt als Produzent von Gruppen, wie z. B. Fleetwood Mac, John Mayall, Peter Green, Eric Clapton u.a.

BBC Radio präsentierte anläßlich des 10. Todestages im WebRadio die

"RORY GALLAGER STORY"

Kein geringerer als der Nordire GARY MOORE präsentierte diese Story bei BBC mit vielen Gästen (u.a. Donal Gallagher, Gerry McAvoy, Lou Martin, Brian May von Queen u.v.m.) und Einspielungen von Org.-Rory-Songs.

Leider wurde die Sendung bereits abgesetzt. Wir hoffen, dass viele Fans sie hören konnten! (03.05.2005)

Die neue CD von Julian Sas "Twilight Skies Of Live" erscheint im Januar 2005.

Bei dem holländischen Internetradio "ARROW" war schon eine Kostprobe zu hören von der Single-Auskopplung "That´s Enough For Me".
Wir fanden es gut und sind schon sehr gespannt auf das neue Album. Vorgestellt und zu erwerben zum ersten Mal bei der CD-Release-Party am 08.01.2005 in Tilburg (Holland). Es ist geplant, bei diesem Auftritt wieder eine DVD mitzuschneiden. Es sind hier - wie zu erwarten war - keine Karten mehr zu bekommen.

Da die Julian-Sas-Band 2005 ihr 10jähriges Bestehen feiert, bekommt Jeder, der an diesem Abend dabei ist, ein Gratis-Tshirt!
