Einweihung des Musikflügels in der City Library in Cork
Rory Gallagher fans flock to new library
MUSIC fans can now make Cork City Library a key destination as a special area dedicated to one of the city´s favourite musical sons has oppend.
The Rory Gallagher Music Library was officially opened by Rory´s mother Monica, while his brother Donal, who manages Rory´s estate, donated memorabilia.
Head librarian Liam Ronayne was delighted with the ceremony.
"Around 200 people came in all. We had fans come from Holland, Germany and France," he said.
A feature of the new library ist a guitar signed by musicians such as Peter Green of Fleetwood Mac. It was signed at a concert in Rory´s memory, held the year after he died.
Last Thursday´s dedication was almost a year in the planning
"Cllr Maureen Quill proposed it last year," said Mr. Ronayne, "but we wanted to finish the extension to the library first. The extension doubles the size of the music library. It holds 20.000 CDs and almost as many LPs, along with 3.000 books. The library will host an exhibition looking at the roots of run in tandem with the vast exhibition in City Hall, when Cork takes over as European Capital of Culture.
