It happened today ...... by Dermot Ryan
Sad death of Cork´s guitar man
It was on this day 10 years ago, in 1995, that the musician died for a generation of rock fans with the news from the King´s College Hospital in London of the death of an adopted son of Cork, Rory Gallagher:
The singer/songwriter had been born in Ballyshannon, Donegal, on March 2, 1948 but had grown up in Cork city and later hat a house in Kinsale.
He had bought his first acoustic guitar at the age of nine, and then graduated to a Fender Stratocaster:
Many Evening Echo readers and rockers will recall dancing to the Fontana Show Band, later The Impact and then The Taste, before Gallagher went solo in 1970.
Tours and television appereances followed with hits like Messin´ With The Kid and Top Priority, but his health began to fail and he had a liver transplant in April 1995. Unfortunately he never recovered.
